View Full Version : TD04-15G vs TD04HL-15G spool-up time

Hi,
I have a flat-flanged TD04HL-15G which I should be installing soon.
I am having last minute doubts, though.
As far as I know, my TD04HL-15G has the same compressor-wheel as the TD04-15G.
The latter has a smaller turbine-wheel, though, which I suppose should make for slightly quicker spool-up than the TD04HL-15G.
Quick spool-up is attractive to me.
I also suppose that the trade-off, with the smaller turbine-wheel, is slightly lower maximum output.
My power-goal is to stay inside the limits of what the M46 transmission can handle.
Will anyone comment on which 15G constitutes the best choice for my project, please?
Thanks.

In both of my B230FT TD04HL-15G powered cars, I saw peak boost around 2100-2300 RPM in fourth gear... Very quick-spooling turbo. Any quicker would just be silly.

I ran a HL (conical) in front of an M46 at 15psi for a year or more, zero issues, and like Eric said, spool was silly fast.
Hopefully you have your engine management sorted? I had a bit of surge from spooling too fast.

Thanks, Eric and Kyle.
Did you guys have any associated modifications: camshaft, intercooler, etc...?
My car is a 245 Ti.
If K-Jet can be made to handle it, 'silly fast' sounds good.

There is No TD04-15g ... .@ least there was never any volvo TD04-15g and NO ONE here has ever run one
they are all TD04HL-15g when it comes to volvo's

If there never was a Volvo-specific TD04-15G, that takes care of my imaginary problem, then.

didn't BKDR make a TD04-15g? but ya trust me on the fact that spool up on the TD04HL-15g is almost too fast. LOL especially once it's on a DP and a ported manifold and housing.

that's how much it should be ported at a minimum
because look at a completely untouched angled flange housing, tell me which one would flow better?

i have a greddy tdo4-15g, and i think bdkr, or one of the other guys ran a 13c-made 15g, but if you look at a 13c ex housing, john, you will see why it is not a great idea

ya i wish i still had a 13c housing laying around to compare to the new flat flange that's been ported it'd show how bad the stock stuff really is

that is one of the volvo freaks .. as there are other factory angled outlet housings that have all of that meat removed and do flow much better

you can pick one up when you get the dremal, the mistu box is deep indeed
i have 2 more angled housings too if one might do better

Did you guys have any associated modifications: camshaft, intercooler, etc...?NPR IC, 3" exhaust, brown tops, K and T cams (T really made it spool), ported the hell out of it, MSNS-E with boost control, etc. Beefy clutch too ;-)

Yeah, I ran a 13c TD04H (as opposed to HL) hotside with a 15g cold. Spooled like a monster. Of course you pay the price for that on the top end. Just depends on what you are after.
Now a good deal of that fast spool was from having a decent MBC too. I have a Dawes MBC and it makes a significant difference.
I'd better add that I think the TD04HL is the better option with a good MBC. What little you lose on the bottom most likely won't be noticeable. The gain is that you'll most likely get better roll on performance, which really is a big deal depending on the kind of driving you are doing.
