No his cat was sucked backwards through the turbo and broke the valve.

Yep. Leaky valve stem seals--> carbon deposits--> flame erosion

Damn man, that sucks! Just did stem seals on the wife's R last weekend, lucked out, no real issues, still runs great at 275k, but I was a bit worried about carbon and such with as much oil as it was consuming.
