531 head????

Hello. I have always wanted a 531 head for my B230FT. To my understanding Volvo penta engines came with 531 heads. I recently found this whole engine for sale for less than the cost of a 531 on eBay so I decided to contact the guy. This picture really concerned me as the distributor is not head mounted. I don't want to harass the guy cause he does not know much about it and I was hoping someone here could tell me more about it and it's usefulness to me.
Thanks in advance,
Adam

The engine code tag will be on the block near the starter. Looks like a b21 or b23. The only thing that would be worth taking to use in a automotive application would be the cam.

Some Volvo Penta Red Blocks came with 531 heads. There were many that came with 530 heads. To my knowledge the Volvo Penta AQ151 came with the 531 head.
If its just the head you're looking at you'll find the number cast into the head itself on the exhaust side between exhaust ports 2 and 3. I think 531 heads came with A cams the majority of the time in Volvo Penta applications.

Not this one.

That is not a 530 or 531 head, it's a 160, 398 or 405 you can tell from the half moon rubber insert in the back side of the head. Have him look on the exhaust side for the casting number.

I believe Volvo used 405 heads on some Penta B21/B23 engines. Like a twin carb one. But maybe this one as well?

The engine looks like it's in good condition. If it's a 405 head on a B23 block that would be good to build up for a car.

Can't help with identification, but in my search for a Penta, I often refer to this post, it has a list of Penta models with their relevant useful parts.
