I think all LH cars had the ECU over the blocked...

I think all LH cars had the ECU over the blocked off passenger kick panel vent? My diesel has vents on both sides. Finding space for my ECU was tricky, wound up putting it in the glovebox.

I use a properly sized bolt between the flapper...

I use a properly sized bolt between the flapper and firewall to wedge mine open. I think it broke when the check valve failed and let boost into the system.

Yeah, in my experience that happens when the unit is on deaths door. Thicker fluid can help (10w30 instead of ATF) but that's just a bandaid and won't last.
