That’s what I’m thinking happened. Maybe it killed the battery. I wonder if the battery is so far gone that it wasn’t able to engage the starter and that’s why it crapped out.

Check the connection for the crank positioning...

Check the connection for the crank positioning sensor and make sure that you have fuel pressure at the rail. How does it run once it is started? I had a 740 that would crank for a really long time....
