If you're looking for a upgrade you might want to consider using a Volvo M90 gear box. They are found in Volvo 940s from 1995 onwards. It's a good transmission and gear change feels definitely sportier than that of the M45/M46/M47. It is also stronger than any of those, but if you do decide to go M90 you should do the welding upgrade on the middle shaft of the tranny (there are three axels in the M90)

Here's a close-up picture of the middle shaft

The blue arrow shows a bearing, that at first seem impossible to remove, but is in a plastic casing and it just twists out. It's really flexible. You have to remove it when welding, otherwise it'll melt and then you're screwed.

You'll have to weld the ring marked with a red arrow to the gear teeth marked with a yellow arrow. You should weld one by one and always switch sides as you go along so that the axle or the ring shall not get warped.

The M90 usually breaks in such a way that the ring with the red arrow gets loose and then the transmission jams up. By welding it it's place it no longer can do that. That's why this should be done.

The getrag, as mentioned by JohnLane, is also a good upgrade over the M45 and others. Here's a thread about installing one in a 240

And don't forget to check out 740ATL pictures about the same thing.

Some will say that the gear ratios on both transmissions are horrible at least, but I personally think that both transmissions are very usable on a street car, certainly not any worse than those of M45/M46/M47. True, there are better ratios on better transmissions, but so there always is, no matter what one is doing. These are easy conversions and they both can handle more torque than any of the M45/M46/M47 trannies can.

EDIT: M90 bolts right up to the redblock, as long as you get the redblock version of the M90. You'll have to fabricate the crossmember for it and have a drive shaft made if you're putting it in to a 240. And you need to convert the clutch to be hydraulically operated, but those parts are found in other volvos and it's a easy job too.
