Transmission Speedometer Gear

Hi,

It seems as though my speedometer gear at the trans has a flat spot on it.

I'm afraid to take it out because I need the car. Will the assembly leak a lot if I don't use a new seal (for the inspection)?

Any replacement recommendations? Just the gear? Junkyard? Dealer?

I have a 1983 200 series turbo.

Thanks,
Albert

What do you mean 'flat spot'? Has the gear been removed and are there chunks missing? This seems unlikely. If you want to replace it go junkyard. A new O-ring and seal would be worthwhile. All the fluid will drain when you remove the speedo drive assembly. So I guess you will need some of that, too.

I got a rear wheel off the ground, disconnected the speedo cable at the trans and turned the wheel. If I help the speedo thing along, it will spin a little and then stop. That's why I think it has a flat spot. I guess I should just open it up and see. I need the car and I'm trying to avoid refilling the trans.

Why do you think it's unlikely? Do you still think that after my description?

Thanks,
Albert
