My 240 recently started making an extremely annoying noise when turning the steering wheel. I removed the wheel and noticed the steering shaft seems to have a lot of play in it. Is there a bearing at the end of the steering shaft that can be easily replaced and if so, is it still available?

Thanks.

The steering column bearings are NLA.

Is there a spring behind the steering wheel? The spring is what pre-loads the bearing. If it's missing the shaft will wobble. It's normal for the shaft to move like that without the steering wheel on.

The spring is there. I tried turning the steering shaft with the wheel removed and it still squeeks so I guess it needs a dab of lube somewhere?

Nobody?s ever had a squeeky wheel before? It?s driving me nuts but I?d rather avoid tearing the whole steering column apart if I could.

I had this a few years ago, and just sprayed a bunch of lube in there when the wheel was off. Eventually the noise went away. Watch for any rubbing on the plastic trim that goes around the column too, they are pretty good at making annoying noises as well.

I had a squeeky wheel one time that was actually a broken column. The xtra fat guy that owned the car before levered his ass out if the car with the wheel and fatique had cracked one of the safety crush sections in the column. Might wanna crawl on the floor and see if the column is still one piece.
I may/may not have "fixed" it with a section of split muffler pipe and a few hose clamps...Probably a bad idea but this is tb.

If that squeak only happens each 1/2 turn of the wheel, look at the steering shaft u-joint out in the engine compartment. Easy way to double check is jack up the front, and turn the wheel all the way back and forth... loose-tight-loose-tight-loose-tight means the joint is binding and should be replaced.

?r det inte ratten som ligger mot k?pan? L?gg p? lite sprej och testa om det blir tyst

I?m starting to suspect this as well. Thanks for the tip!

I?ve pinpointed the squeek and it?s coming from the upper u-joint by the brake booster. Spraying it with penetrating oil makes it go quiet. Unfortunatly, this part seems way harder to find than the lower u-joint by the rack.

In my experience the aftermarket joints are junk and will go back fast, I ended up replacing the bad ones in my 84 with some not so worn ones from the junkyard

Hey, anyone out in the Brickyard want to offer ideas why my 90' wagon wheel (steering) wobbles? It's not the shaft! It did squeak but fixed that.
Just had speedo fixed again... and to make life easy pulled the steering wheel to get the cluster easily out and disconnect the wires....Anyway...after reinstalling and torquing down the nut I grabbed the wheel and it rocked like it was missing a washer or da spring. Pulled the wheel off and ...down under were all da correct bits so fished out some washers and put a couple behind the nut torqued it down and....it still wobbles on the shaft. Shaft is solid, no wobble there, just seems to be something not stacking up behind the wheel. Maybe need a new longer spring?
