240 IRS Swap???

I know I'm going to make a noob of myself, considering this is my first post on this board...

Is the rear suspension of a 240 on a removable subframe? Has anyone considered swapping in 760/940 IRS?

Are there any 240 IRS swaps out there?

Why?
Why not buy a nice simple car that has a 2300 turbo motor and IRS already?

What do you imagine you'll gain after huge expenditures of money and effort?

I've got the interest and I've got the time...sort of. I've always loved the 240 saloons, just wish it had better suspension. I don't care much for live axles, unless I'm haulin' something big. I don't want my saloon to ride and handle like a truck. I think it'll be an interesting project...and considering the attention this thread has received, along with the few other 240 IRS swap threads on this board, I don't think I'm alone in wishing my 240 had IRS.

A volvo that handles better. We like our volvos :-P

I like 240s too. Spent yesterday gutting the interior of one which is getting a cage, a 16v NA kick ass motor, a GM T5 and a axle with long LOOOOOONG 4 link set up, probably a Toyota 8" pick up axle so we can get LSDs EASY and alternate ratios and have something that will not break.

And of course good suspension

28" links will allow plenty of travel and it'll handle better than 99.9% of people here can drive it.

Point is a well located solid rear will work fantastic even on asphalt well past any sane speeds whereas a poorly done IRS may have it's own quirks and problems.

But let's see what the OP says....

Saloons? You're Anglais, no?
Then look how well Escort MkI and MkIIs worked.
They work fine, and the RIDE is a choice and really is a different thing from 'handling".

What do you want?
Ride or handling?

Are you asking if I'm English? Haha, no...Puerto Rican and Jewish.

I trust a live axle can can be engineered for improvement, but I'm really more a fan of IRS for spirited driving. Just a preference thing. I trust both ride quality and handling will be improved

I speak a number of languages, I have been a paid swearing instructor and know English and many many obscure dialects of english.

Referring to a 3 box car as a "saloon" is for anybody but a stuffy Pommie bastid, a huge and bizarre affectation.
likewise the IRS fixation.
Good luck, take lots of piccies and tell us how it turns out.

if you part out Miatas per another thread of yours, why not adapt an IRS from one of those?

supposedly there is a 242 with an RX7 rear IRS underneath it, we have not seen pictures yet, only been teased by the owner and fabricator/installer

That's not a bad idea! I considered it for a second, but won't be certain until I thoroughly inspect a 940 IRS rear. I want as many parts to be as interchangeable with other Volvo's as possible...I'm going to try to use 760/940 coilovers, hubs and disc brakes...and I'd like to try and use 760/940 control arms.

Mate, the Volvo irs is a bad design, we have no choice for coilovers!

what's this?

I'm supposed to take delivery of a 240 coupe tomorrow. When I get a chance, I'm going to take some measurements, so I can better understand what to look for. I'm going to start by measuring distance from wheel to wheel and from frame rail to frame rail. I've got an extra Miata rear subframe and differential to test fit!

One doesn't make choice. Plus it's a semi trailing arm design, use the skyline one and you will have a real choice of hundreds of different coil overs.

Hey!! Has anything come out of this whole idea in the end?

Would love to have some more discussion on this whole IRS swap thing as i want to do it on the 242 of mine :)

I have a complete Supra IRS, even has the e-brake cables and lug nuts, available for whoever is looking.
I have switched my design to use a 3 link and the Supra stuff needs to go.
