Default 5 cylinder T5 motor in 960?

So soon I will have a extra T5 motor from my brothers wrecked S70. I thought it may be interesting to find a 960 with a blown motor and swapping it out for the 5 cylinder T5 engine. I know I'd have to have the oil pan shortened, and probably work with the accessory mounting and stuff, but really, how hard would it exactly be? Would/could the T5 motor use the 6 cylinder mounting spots and stuff? Would I use the COP and remove the dizzy from the T5 motor? Would the Dizzy even clear the firewall?

Just kinda wondering. I'd love to shove that motor in my 240 but I don't have the skill for that

You would still need to figure out the trans and EMS **** and the passenger side 960 engine mount probably won't fit the S70 motor. I'd say swapping a 5 cyl in to a 960 is only marginally less work than swapping it in to a 240.

Cool Karl. I was reading your whiteblock in a 240 article and I remember reading something about the 850 motor having a different mount. I do have a yellow R with a good motor as well that I've been considering parting out as well. Would this motor be more suitable?

And yeah, I'd say I could just buy a T6 engine and stick it in a 960, but I just want to shove these spare whiteblocks I have into something

and Could I just not use the 6 cylinder auto trans that the car would already have in it?

Ummm, use welder in garage and profit. I think we could get an ecu reflash to remove the tranny trouble. Then we would just need to bolt a big turbo, and figure out an intake manifold along with the mounts and oil pan. Pick up that Turbo coupe tranny and lets get it to fit.

The R should have the right hardpoints for the 960 mounts. You still need to **** with the water transfer tube, the intake manifold will be all wrong, and it might not clear the steering rack.

The 960 trans will bolt up, but controlling it could be an issue. Paddle shifters obviously work, but if you're not interested in that you could have a problem.

jeeps and toyotas use a seperate trans control module to activate the aw-30/43... the jeep one is extremely simple and has potentiometers to adjust shift points and such. just an idea if you want to keep it simple.

I think its hit and miss with the engine mounts, well dependant on when the car was registered, or the change over date is somewhere mid 1996, as i bought another engine from a 1996 car like the one in mine and it was missing all the engine mounts.

What "mini distributor" are you talking about? All whiteblock sixes have coil on plug.

They are like regular 960 distributors, only really really tiny. exactly what you think it is...

Last I check the 6 needed the micro actually. If packaging is a concern you can go nano but that **** is expensive.

OK, that was a bit of a gaff, but isn't it possible just to point it out or correct it without half a dozen following posts taking the piss every time? Isn't it being just a little harsh and unnecessarily critical?

While I'm sure there is a large amount of collective knowledge and wisdom on this site, I doubt if many are truly 'expert' in every area of our technical interest, and they shouldn't be expected to be.

Aren't these kind of threads better suited to pooling experience, ideas and information on many aspects of the cars rather than just taking any opportunity to shoot down in flames anyone who gets something a little wrong while seeking advice? That can't be good.

I have to say, this kind of thing sometimes makes me wonder if some of the responses aren't so much smart as smart-arse.

You're just starting to realize this?

He was trying to be helpful, which is great. It just happened to come out in a funny way.

Save for RP242T's post, which is just a dickhead comment, all the others fall under harmless ribbing.

It's an internet forum not a university.

We're here for entertainment purposes first. So yeah, "taking the piss" is a big part of it.

If you learn something then great but overall it's just a message board. There are better ways to gather technical info.

I wasn't referring to Alex's original reply at all, which was perfectly fair and simply points out the fact that the sixes don't have distributors.

Its also OK to have a bit of a joke about it too, but I found RP242T's reply in particular a bit too cutting to take as being light hearted. I note that the posts in question have now been ommitted, and think that it is a bit of a shame if someone who is interested in these cars has been discouraged in any way by this sort of response.

I'm not suggesting that the forum needs to be formal or anything like that either, but the fact is that it IS a really good way to get real world info from people who have experience of doing similar things in a similar way and for similar reasons. You can't get that from any technical sheet, even if it does sometimes needs to be taken with a large pinch of salt.

As an old fogie with some 30 years of motorsport experience (and some notable success) behind me , I know that I still learn something new most days, and still have much to learn in some areas as well!
I just feel it wouldn't hurt to show a little more patience to those who are interested in learning something at a time when there has never been more to have to take in, and when the thread is after all in the 'performance and suspension' section.

Anyway, didn't mean to get so heavy, just a point.....
