We've got that problem here just now as well. You get £2000 against the cost of a new car for anything 10 years old or more that is still in use. Many 'classic' cars have suffered this fate, and once they enter the system the only option for them is crushing... shocking. I've seen some beautiful cars like this in my local breakers yard.

The £2000 seems most often to offset against the cost of a small cheap model. These people ought to be flogged.

So, there don't seem to be many non turbo 760's left with their original engines, even on a site like this. What chance then that there are any nice original 264's, 265's or 262C's surviving this long?

To most "normal people" out there who don't put any sentimental value to vehicles this is actually a good deal. You'll never get that much for the car as a trade in or direct sale through a newspaper ad. That was the case with many of the cars that got crushed in the states - remember that Maserati Biturbo that actually ran? The owner had been trying to unload it for $1800 for 6 months and no one was interested. He wasn't interested in having a lawn ornament and the feds were willing to give him 4500 for it.

262's have the best chance of surviving on the account of their uniqueness. 265's and 264's would have needed a hardcore Volvo freak taking them under their wing. To a normal person again they're just same old boxy Volvos that are expensive to maintain. I think the 760 V6 is about the most unloved RWD Volvo out there, too expensive for cheapskates and too fat & slow for performance crowd.

That is true.

In the UK half of the money comes from the government and the other £1000 from the dealer, so it is partly a dealer discount to boost flagging sales. The government say it gets older emmissions 'dirty' and less fuel efficient vehicles off of the road.

Mostly I have no beef with this plan as most 10 year old cars also are of no interest to me, but now and again a really special or historically important car turns up among the rubbish.

I've heard stories of dealers paying the full £2000 themselves to prevent them being crushed (and often making a profit) by keeping them out of the plan, but still a lot of nice cars have been cubed.

The truth is that many modern cars are only built to last 10 years anyway. They are not made to be easy to maintain beyond fluid changes etc. With parts and labour costs, it is now often better to scrap older cars with minor faults and replace them rather than repair for many people. In this way modern cars aren't unlike automotive video recorders or TV's.... nobody really repairs much anymore. Beyond 2 or 3 years old they don't really have any real value, as can be seen by how readily insurance companies write them off with minimal damage. They have been described as throw-away cost minimized basic transportation devices.

This was not the mentality when many of these old Volvos were built. In comparison they are quite easy to work on, simple, better built and less likely to suffer from 'programmed obsolescence' with longer production runs with less changes. It might make short term economic sense to scrap them in this way when they could easily be saved, but it still seems a great shame to me.

I can't imagine in effect trading an immaculate Verdigris metallic 964GLE (albiet with a geabox fault) plus £6000 against a little box of Korean built crap, but that was the source of one of my engines!

Well the 964 owner probably saw it as "I can pay 3000 quid today for a gearbox rebuild, and find out next week that the engine is conked out - or I can just finance 6000 and have a brand new car with a warranty". Just like you do with a TV, dishwasher or any other appliance. This will continue until the interest rates go through the roof and no one can afford to finance anything anymore.

Wasn't it about 10 years ago when they started talking about how they could recycle only 25% from an old car and new cars were now designed to be 80% recyclable. That's all well and good, but cars didn't magically become 50% cheaper in the meanwhile so that you could afford to just toss 'em.

Other then that I've got the 960/S90 dash, IRS(not sure whether to count this as a plus or minus, not enough is known about it really), luxury goods, aluminum hood etc....and the 90+ b230ft.
Wanna sell it?

Been looking for one unsuccessfully for god knows how many years. Basically since I totalled mine in '02.

The IRS is a massive plus. The solid axle cars do not handle nor ride anywhere near as well.

Hey Filip,

to other forum user, we will continue in English,Turbosteen has bought my 16vt accidented for his project.

Gave this 90 760TI to my friend John for storing all my other other Volvo, I kept the snow tires just put them on my son's 740. Not bad nearly new snow tires mounted for $200.
