Time to put up a thread on my 244DL.
Got one on most of my other Volvos...
This 244DL with B21E and M45 was owned by an elderly couple and used as their second car after they replaced it with an '80s 245.
It sat outside their house parked on the street for a couple of years without moving, although the registration was always paid.
Last year I was looking for a runaround for a while and I left a note on the windscreen saying it didn't seem to move at all and would they be interested in selling it?
I got a call to say that they weren't interested in selling but that they might down the track and they would keep my number and call me when they wanted to sell.
A few months back I got a call out of the blue, Metro had put a bus stop right in front of their house and they had to move the car.
He tried to start it but the battery was properly dead.
One new battery later it fired up but the clutch wouldn't release so he rolled it in front of his neighbour's house and called me asking if I wanted to tow it away free of charge.
I arrived and found that by pumping the clutch I could get it into gear.
I had a lovely chat with the owners and they told me it might not have much petrol and handed me $30 to put some petrol in , saying I was doing them a favour by removing it!
It drove home fine, with clutch pumping for gear shifting although I found a cracked fuel hose was leaking so I had to sort that.
Then it was my daily for a few months until the clutch got too bad to use.
I have a clutch rubbers kit waiting for me to pick up, then I just have to pay the registration which expired a couple of weeks ago and I an drive it again.
The engine has protested at being left for years then revived by deciding to smoke rather a lot and drink oil...so I will try and find out if it is the original engine or not.
If it is I will probably rebuild it, if it isn't then it will get a B23 although I am leaning very heavily towards fitting a modern turbo diesel, maybe the 1.9 VW TDi which has more power and torque than a B21 stock and can be tweaked very easily to make LOTS of torque...and still return incredible economy!
There is an adapter available for TDi to Toyota RWD gearbox....and here in Aus there are kits to fit Toyota box into 240 chassis...so mounts and speedo and tailshaft are a bolt in proposition as is engine to gearbox leaving only engine mounts to worry about....
Apologies for the quality of the crappy phone pictures, but someone borrowed my digital camera and broke it, and I only got another working digi last night so better pics will be forthcoming at some point soon!
