Mrs Carl will not appreciate a rusty crumbling pipe.

I guess I’m super fortunate. I wrapped mine a few years ago and it still has the same ceramic paint under it and no rust.

Fix the GD oil leak. '90+ manifold, T3/T4, ATP Ultimate WG, 3" down, from 10 to 15 PSI, maybe from 150 WHP to 200.

Ha! I’ll be rocking the turbo clutch for the time being. Where there’s smoke, there’s fire...

Same turbo clutch / flat-flywheel, same M47.

Just need to fix the GD oil leak. Oh, and while I'm at it, more turbo would be nice...

Does Carl want to join the T5 rattles club? :P

@LC4CARL If you are considering a T5, I highly recommend riding/driving in a 240 with one to understand the different noises that it makes. While it is an improvement in the gear ratio department, it is a step down in refinement (IMO).

Yeah, once I recover from the engine effort, the trans or efi will be next. I just needed a hobby during the 'Rona. Fix the stupid leaks and tidy things up. Oh, and the turbo will be off anyway...

So what's a "good" swap for these if not the T5? Is a six-speed with the effort?

The 6-speed is waaaaaaaaaaaaay overpriced now. They're very popular with the drift kids, so the scene tax is sky high.

I'd vote for an M90.

Based on this list, seems about the same amount of fiddling as a T5 swap.

Trans has to be sourced from UK/Europe, but IIRC there is at least one TB member who facilitates M90 sales.

Also, Retro Turbo and ClassicSwede have some bits to help with the conversion.

I'm a fan of the T5, but the one's I've worked on and modified have all been quiet on 4cyl cars...

Harlard, get that BMW wagon done so you can rip out your T5 and bring it over for a check-up

My t5 is noisy, sure, but the entire car is noisy with poly, boxed arms, and coilovers. Oh, and it's a 1979 so everything makes noise.

My t5 makes so much noise that the rest of the car feels like a luxury yacht by comparison when I press the clutch pedal at 60.

harald's is the only t5 car i've driven that didn't annoy me, but that was before it started falling apart. i just wish it was as easy to do some kind of toyota transmission as it is to do a t5.
