Qwkswede's 1967 122 Time Machine

Making some slow progress on the rear axle assembly. Now that I have tires I can get much closer measurements. I'm not sure I did the math right when I first shortened the Ford axle, but it is close. I might be chopping another 1" from each side. More measuring to be done...

I need to start cutting sheet metal from the inner fender area this week. I'm going to remove the spring pocket and some other tight areas. That should let me set the car down on top the tires to see what else I need to cut and move. I'm planning to remove and rebuild the inner fenders inboard 1-1.5" in a mini tub setup like they do on alot of the pro-touring type cars these days.

Eventhough this pic has no scenery it makes me miss Colorado. Maybe I should move back. I hear the skyrocketing real estate values are not as bad as Portland...

Availability is the worst part. Houses get bought the day they're listed. There's very few houses actually for sale at any given time.

Ken, I know we said when both our cars are done we'll go run them together at Bandimere but I see that tire and I take it back. hehehe.

Aww man! The rematch will happen. Someday. 21.xxx quarter mile passes are fun in their own twisted way. Like a kid on the trampoline that is afraid to jump. "Its my turn DAMNIT" "Let me finish my turn!"

But I"m itching AND terrified, to drive a 1967 chassis 130mph at the big end.

Eh, it'll be fun. I see guys all the time at the local track in their various beasts, some should be shot and put in the ground as bad as they are.

At least my 140 never did a 21 second pass, been 18's, probably 17's or maybe a high 16 now. lol

Some minor progress on the rear end install.

I finally removed the gas tank and interior so I could really get to work fitting the rear axle and 10" wide tires.

So far I just cut out the spring pockets to see what else I would need to modify to fit the tires. They do fit up in the arches now, but they rub on the inside and there isn't enough clearance at the outer fender lip either. Getting close though. I need to really start cutting metal for my mini-tub job. And likely shorten the axle another inch.

Yeah 8v this time. I have a nice collection of "hot" 8v parts that I have never used. I'm going to try for a www.Swedishracingmotors.com inspired 500hp 8v motor. I've been talking to Jens a bit over the last year.

I have lots of work to do still. And while I'm anxious to get to the track again, this old car is purely hobby and I'm pretty happy to take my time as money and free time trickle in. Kinda different when you need a car to be a street/daily driver. This one doesn't even have to pass emissions every 2 years.

Hence the "Wall of Chores" in the garage to keep me on track:

I see I need to cross a few items off the wall there.

Long overdue update

Well, not much to update. I got a bit sidetracked and low on project car funds. So this car has been sitting taking up space in my garage. But I am finding some motivation and time lately. Pictures and discussion always help stoke the fire....

-------- Latest rear suspension work ---------------
I decided that the rear tire situation wasn't going to work how I wanted. The plan now is to make room for a 28x10" slick. Manual trans cars like tall tires that can take the shock load on launches. And I think the car will look better with a bigger tire.

So I started sawing and fabricating a 4 link for the rear. And that is where it sits for now. I'll post some pics as the rear chassis build progresses.

I promised myself that I would spend 2 Sundays a month working on the old project until it's running... Let's see how long that promise lasts.

I'm a month into my resolution and making some good progress. I do spend a fair bit of time figuring, calculating, measuring, and shopping in between sessions. I have no idea what I'm doing with this chassis stuff other than what I can read from some websites and books. I'm learning and doing as I go.

Pictures here are from the last month.

I finally got the rear frame rails completely installed and welded to the rear bumper area. Happily the body of the car came out straight, and the trunk still opens and closes like it always did. Also, the chromoly 4 links are now built minus a panhard bar. That item is on the list for this upcoming weekend.

Here are the coilover shocks bolted in and upper mounts built. Also the car is sitting on the ground for the first time in years!. It was nice to be able to roll the car around to clean the spider webs and sweep the floor underneath.

At this point, I stepped back and got a look at things. And I'm not 100% happy with the shock mounts I built. I would like to move the entire shock package upwards away from the ground. My thinking is with a flat tire I could be scraping the shock and lower mounts on the ground. That seems dangerous in the event of a flat tire. So I might move the top brackets inboard of the frame rails before I'm done here. But it's good for holding the car up now.

Shifting gears for some easier stuff to do midweek when I don't have any help. I started trying to find all the bolts, gaskets, and parts for the motor I so carefully packed away 3 years ago.

I dusted off the cylinder head I assembled a couple years ago and bolted it down with fresh torque to yield bolts and an Elring gasket. The head has some big valves installed and some minor port work in the bowl areas. The camshaft is an RSI stage 3. A local shop SCH Racing Heads did the head work for me.

That is all for now.

it's funny, I was looking at that same subframe setup about 2 weeks ago (it's probably still open in one of my 47 tabs actually). I may hit you up one afternoon/evening/whatever & talk about that guy.

Any time brotha. You still have my number I assume.
