I'm replacing out several of the components on the front end of my 1975 242 which are suffering from rust and corrosion. This includes the front struts, hubs & calipers (upgrading to vented rotors/calipers), controls arms and the cross member. I'll be keeping the manual steering rack of the '75. I have acquired parts from a 89 240 and wanted to confirm they will be a direct fit. With the vented brake upgraded, need to figure out if there will be an issue with the brake line junction block.

The brake lines are different on '75-'77 240's. They use an inverted flare instead of a bubble flare and the brake warning valve (octopus) is in a different location.

Ya all of it, and hope the tubes are before the weld in spacers so you can run billies.

1989 is pre-ABS, so spacers should be removable. That said, it is possible to run Billy HD's with spacers successfully. Did it on an '83. No clunks, and the gland nuts remained tightened down.

i see nothing i would replace due to rust, wow p.m. you cell phone number and I'll show you rust my 85 the spring perch rusted if the strut tube and the tire is sitting on the spring

Ah yes, I forgot the difference on the flares on 78 and later 240s. I may have to grab the brake lines off of the 89 donor. - Thanks

The brake lines still go into the calipers the same. So you could keep the old type lines and just use them on the new struts. Unless of course your early car uses the ATE calipers. Then you will have to change some stuff to have it work work.

I am part of the Bernal Dads race team, the 92 Volvo wagon which was turned into the Muni bus was originally acquired by me before it went over to BDR. (See post #4 in this thread: http://forums.turbobricks.com/showthread.php?t=324743) There wasn't much to pick off of the Bus as it was pretty much stripped and anything in the front end of the car suspension wise isn't usable after the crash.

The about two hours before the Bus was stuffed into the wall at Sonoma Raceway, I picked up a 1989 240 as a parts car for my 75 242 and a week later BDR picked it up as a possible replacement race car as they could not locate a non-bent 240 wagon for under $1K, as one member of the team really wanted to keep racing volvo wagons. We agreed on what parts I wanted off of it for the 242 and they started to strip it down. A couple days later I pointed them to the $300 1992 which popped up in Monterey on Craigslist and they picked that up and the team has started prep work to get the 245 set up into a Lemons car.

Pulling parts from the dead Bernal Dads race car?

Since I want the vented rotors in the front of the 242, it seemed not that much more effort to replace out the strut assemblies. With the 1989 parts car then started to think why not replace the cross member and a control arms. Will most likely scale back to replacing out the strut assemblies for the time being. I don't see the rust as being an immediate concern, coming originally from the East Coast, I have seen and worked on really rusty cars.
