My 78 242 with stock b21f has a noisy pump that feels and sounds like its fluctuating pressure directly in correlation with engine loping. I've confirmed that my in tank pump is running and the fuel line connecting the pump to the sender has been replaced as well as the sock filter. Seems like the main pump is on its way out and ive been searching through threads trying to figure out a replacement but everything I find is just open ended suggestions. I have the pump with the outlet on the side, so IPD says this pump - https://www.ipdusa.com/products/6996/104538-volvo-main-fuel-pump-k-jet-200-bosch-0580464126-1336517
is not compatible with my car. Is this because the fittings are different? Could it be adapted to work? Having trouble finding a direct replacement. Any suggestions for a replacement or links to threads where someone has made the conversion or actually has an alternative that works on their car would be mucho obliged

Is the tank pump providing a steady stream of fuel (~1qt / 30 sec per Greenbook TP30454)? Put the line from the input of the main pump in a container and jumper the fuses to run the tank pump only. I had similar issues and the culprit was an underperforming tank pump. I replaced it with the ipd "upgrade" pump and my main pump has been quiet.

If your main pump is indeed going bad, you can always replace both pumps with a single in-tank pump such as a DWx00.

I am questioning myself now as there seems to be a slight change even when I drop the fuel tray down to get to the pump when the car is running. This subtle change I observe when i've changed nothing but gravity makes me think it could be the in tank pump... When i had it out a few weeks ago it seemed to be running fine, but I cant seem to hear it when I put my ear to the fuel door now... I'll go crack the feed line now to see what I can observe. As for the accumulator, I have no reason to think its faulty. It clearly holds pressure, and the car starts mainly on one crank every time. It'll idle fine for the most part, its mainly only when the car is in drive and moving that it'll lope pretty badly. Back in park, its not as bad. Hard to pinpoint as its an intermittent thing

Also- jumpering fuses 5 and 7 on this car does not cause the pumps to run. Only jumpering at the fuel pump relay harness will do this. I suppose I could provide 12v directly to the pump via the harness in the trunk?

So I didn’t crack the line going to the main pump because when I supplied 12v directly to the tank pump via its harness in the trunk.... I got nothing. No hum, nothing. So it’s strange that it died at some point within the past two weeks, but it’s definitely dead. Will check the yards for a 740 turbo, or get the ipd upgrade ordered tonight and work from there.

If you're worried about cheap, advance auto has aftermarket main pump for~$43 and about $30 for the in tank. I wouldn't fool around with a boneyard pump unless you're a masochist. Or promise ring wannabe

Problem solved with new feed pump. Surprised the old one died within a week, but a much cheaper fix than the main pump. Main pump is running silently now. Thanks to those that chimed in.
