I'm looking into replacing my charcoal cannister and since a replacement is NLA has anyone found a suitable substitute? Right now my focus is on this for the cannister with an external purge valve both shown in the pictures. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks Ralph

If you use one with an external valve like you show that should work. You would connect the small vacuum hose from the throttle body to the top of the valve and the large hose is used for the fumes from the canister. So the valve would be in series in the larger hose that goes from the canister to the throttle body. The other hose connection on the canister would be from the tank. Should work fine as long as the valve opens with the same amount of vacuum.

I'm curious if you found a good solution. Other (older) threads are just piles of dead links and obsolete parts.

I have found the canisters without a purge valve using GM part# 17113148 on rockauto.com (4 options currently available between $58-$76)

With the inline valve, I've only found a single option still available for about $25, the WVE 2M1006 (alternate oem part#'s 17087232, 17087303, 17090161, 17091151, 214557, 214559, 228032, 228036, 2M1020, PV134). Since they're coming from different warehouses, I may just order the purge valve first and do a bit of pressure/vac testing with it. My existing canister/purge-valve had failed open, so not only was it a constant vacuum leak, I suspect that means it was pressurizing things it shouldn't when under boost (1981 242 Turbo).

Spark, here are the components I used in my configuration for my 84 242 NA.

Cannister Purge Valve

and I used either the Wells VC 120 (Ebay) or the GM VC 215-153 (Scoggin Dickey Parts)

Hope this helps. Ralph
