Yeah, the single black wire is the hinge ground. It's there to prevent current from travelling through the hinge pin.
The headliner has a thin strip of plastic sewn along the edge. The plastic is tucked into a thin channel along the roof. Gently pull the headliner out to remove the plastic strip from the channel. It may help to warm the headliner so that it's more flexible if it's cold where you are.
The unmarked switch is for the rear wipers. The rear defrost switch is the one next to it marked "REAR DEFR.".
