Well, the suspension is all back together with the GAZ coilovers and fresh brake pads. The GAZ gold coilovers have far far better street manners than the Koni Race struts—they really aren’t even comparable. I stripped the peeling paint off of the calipers, revealing the charcoal anodized finish beneath, and finished things off with fresh decals.

With that done, I’m turning toward all of the little details and tweaks that turn it into what will hopefully be a nice, refined car. So, basically not a 240

Next of the little details was adding hood insulation.

I have quite a long list to get through, but most of it will be much more enjoyable than a lot of the maddening troubleshooting I’ve been up to for the past few years. At some point I need to tune this on a dyno. Also need to get it in for a proper alignment soon. So much to do, but 240 nirvana is within reach now.

I have the same GAZ struts on my car. Love them. I will be installing BNE's QSRC pieces as soon as I get some camber plates. Thanks for the explanation about the Ackermann bracket settings. I was curious and couldn't find any info.

I got the front only kit because I already installed GAZ shocks last year, but they do offer a front and rear kit. It takes GAZ 4-6 weeks to build them once they have 240 strut tubes/knuckles on hand.

Yes, for a 240, I would strongly recommend GAZ over Koni at this point. Go for it!

Awesome progress man. I was looking forward to listening to Dave Brubeck's Take Five and making "whooooosh che-che-che" noises while getting a ride in this car at Davis. I guess that will have to wait. I hope you guys (and the 242) can make it out West sometime soon.

Thanks, Chris! Definitely a rain check on that ride. If nothing else, we’re penciling in the same glorious road trip for Davis next year. That just means the 242 will be that much more ready for Dave to grace the speakers with the sweet sounds of those tickled ivories.

Before I lose them, I'm dropping in a few photos from last summer that were just sent to me.

I'm in the middle of building new door panels, so i'll share some photos of that once I have it wrapped up. A combination of suede, textured hdpe, and gloss black aluminum. Not to the finish line, but I'm happy with how they are coming along.

Beyond that, I've just been driving this a lot, and it's goooood.

Tom, without digging back thru 32 pages of build thread, did you weld up the beltline trim holes yourself.... were they already filled when you bought the 242? I'm still debating this mod in my mind.... I've got a full set of the 84 wide black trim, but your naked belt rail looks darn good.

Thanks for the kind words, all! Always nice to hear.

I won’t be making multiple sets of door panels... it’s a decent bit of work with hand held tools, and it also requires harvesting the stamped steel top of the factory panel. It’s not hard, but there is a lot of fiddling involved to get things just right.

As far as the belt line trim holes, those were already filled when I got the shell, so I can’t shed any light on the process of that.

They should weld up pretty well. I've done stuff that large with no plugs to fill the bulk (using wire to fill the whole hole), grinding both sides almost flat, hammering each plug with a dolly on the backside to stretch/relax the metal back out, then grinding it flat the rest of the way.

IF you don't want to just freehand it, you I'd get this tool:

make yourself filler plugs with the closest smaller die from some scrap steel and do the steps above.

Isn’t this 2fast242gt’s old 242? If so, I’m 95% sure he did the welding work. It too, was an awesome build.
