Just one of the volvo parked under a tarp for the fog break. Mostly the free range MR2 and lots of pit shots.

awesome guys! we were looking into doing chumpcar with our leopard print 240 wagon. It seems like it might be tough to get it into... We have extra money into the car because we raced it a couple times at 24 hours of lemons. (they give you a residual value after every race, which gives you some more money to play with in the budget.) 240's do great tho, ours only had the alternator fail and a flat tire.

ps, we use redline in our stock rearend 91 240, no problems in 2 races.

how many cars entered?
how tough was inspection?

I'm glad you liked my shots! I will try to get a shot of each of the cars that ran last weekend. It's a lot of work editing photos. I will try to get all five shots of the spin into one photo. I'm strictly amateur time when it comes to Photoshop, so no promises.

64ish cars I think.

Inspection...tough in the sense of budgetary strictness? They stared at the "coilovers" since the springs are newish and look vaguely "fancy." The car definitely looks the part and is the part of a 500 dolla wonder tho. If it were my car and got repo'ed, other than no brainer safety stuff, I wouldn't feel the slightest attachment to anyone getting anything off it. I'd probably take the cylinder head so people couldn't see what I did there were it mine (not due to money, just time, experience and thought).

Good to have other input that an axle can make it 2 24 hour races. I had no other experience, so I had no strong opinion as to whether it should have a cooler or not, but my gut said "no, just sort it out with better stock parts." I'm sure a cooler wouldn't hurt, just more potential cost/time and complexity...tho the volvo oil cooler is excellent quality, as are volvo oil pumps and oil cooler lines...the motor and the combination might take some doing.

Must have been lotsa fun racing that 245!

Alpina diffcover on their converted BMW's:

They've been doing this on their streetcars since the late 70's and in touringcar racing the e9 CSL coupes got a similar oilcooler setup like the grA 242T.

we have been using a bone stock open 1041 axel 4,10:1 ratio on the VOC rallycar. never been appart, it's been holding up for 3 rally seasons. it has the alu cover on it. plain common 80W90 in it. a rally usually has 600km of driving spread over 2 days of which 150km are hard special stages, which is 95% acceleration and little cooling.

Do you guys ever see those pumps that you attach to a drill? I think attaching one to a small 12v motor would provide plenty of flow and be a very light wieght system. Just a thought
for a burnout car pumping huge power, yeah. Race car..... Nar. It would add more wieght and need to be alot more complex before it would be worth the time. E.g. Installing a thermostat to make sure it stays at a certain temp. Where as addding fins would do just as good a job, for alot less time and money. All depends on how good the welder is. If they just have huge ****ty welds then it wouldnt permit any cooling gains at all.

That cover is awesome.

That's the way to go - make a cover with fins that get airflow like that and allows another quart of oil or so.

If we are looking for examples of potential second cars, this one looks like a better candidate... B23... Although I think Bergen may have already picked up a second contender http://seattle.craigslist.org/kit/pts/1448919195.html

Another option for diff cooling I was thinking about, short of welding fins on... would be if you had an aluminum diff cover, you could just make a scoop that catches a bunch of air from right under the diff, and makes it flow right over the back of the cover. I may have to do some trials on my 242.

not sure what they had in it (LSD? )but a welded dif and you wouldnt need a oil cooler . But in the rain with a welded dif you would need bigger bumpers.

did any of the cars get sold? that miata had motor sports on it

We were running a welded diff, with relatively good results... Although it really was only heavily raining on Friday afternoon.

Suprisingly none of the cars were claimed and sold... Wheels and tires were not part of the $500 budget, so as long as they were less than 2x what the cost of oem wheels and tires would be, they were allowed (along with brakes for that matter). So like the Protege was running kosei k1's...

does anyone on the team remember putting fluid in the diff? I remember handing someone the RTV for the diff cover...and I remember pointing where the redline was in the shop...that's all I remember.

I sure didn't, but wasn't part of the build out.
