Rebuild Kit for ZF steering rack?

1986 245 M46

My ZF steering rack was leaking very badly, so I bought a rack from a local salvage yard to replace it. The replacement turned out to be a CAM rack. After installing the replacement, I found it is leaking from the input shaft. Not very much, but enough that I would rather get my steering rack leak-free.

So I took my ZF rack to a local steering rebuild shop. They said their supplier didn't have a kit for rebuilding it.

But they're selling the kits on ebay?

Like this one: https://www.ebay.com/itm/223528824897

Sure, bring us the kit and we'll fix it. But if it's not right, you'll get the rack back in pieces.

They also pulled out the rack on the toothed side and took a look at it. They saw some scratches, but no pitting, and they said it could be rebuilt. They seemed to have total confidence it could be done if they had the parts.

So is that ebay kit correct? Here is a picture of the data plate from my ZF rack.

The part number 7832155 is on the rack as well.

I sent that image to the ebay seller with the same question, but haven't heard back yet.

I also found this site selling a kit: https://powersteeringseals.com/produ...ies-1979-1988/

Anyone have any experience with either "Best Parts Online" or "Power Steering Seals" and their rebuild kits?

My alternative would be the Maval rack from FCP, but many of the threads on the Maval complain about it leaking.

Just send your rack in to Jorgen. That is pretty much all they do.

According to my email with Jorgen back in February, they are no longer rebuilding these racks.

Fwiw, I tried to get an exchange TRW steering rack for my 240 and found that Elstock racks were not available anymore. I'll email them to check for sure but it seems like there are less suppliers for these parts.

They're temporarily out of stock for your application, but for $212.90 Detroit Axle will sell you a rebuilt assembly.

Glad I did mine last year!

After further research, I found this interesting thread with some pictures of a rebuild.

I also found this 65 page PDF of a ZF service manual.

I'm probably going to proceed with my local rebuilder, but perhaps someone else will find these links useful.

Here is the link to the correct ZF rebuild kit. It's less if you get it direct from the company. This is made by Kotek.

Resurrecting this thread. Anybody have anything to say about Detroit Axle? Good or Bad?

Mr. V 03-08-2021 10:16 PM

I mentioned them above but have never bought from them.

They look good on paper: good price, lifetime warranty and free shipping:

If you pull the trigger and get one it would be great to get your feedback.

I will if I buy one. I am picking off issues with this car one at a time, and I'm not sure if my rack is leaking or it's something else.

I placed an order last month. Still waiting...

I ended up buying a ZF core and shipping it to Sellholm, hopefully have something fun back sometime in April :boink:

blkaplan 03-11-2021 11:11 AM

I have no experience with it yet... but wonder if its a good service we should offer and get acquainted with.

TestPoint 03-12-2021 07:09 PM

The problem with moving these things around for rebuild is the shipping cost. Rebuild parts kits are cheap and can be found but finding someone experienced locally to do the work might be difficult. I would certainly try it myself with a $20 kit before sending it out to someone else that had never done one before.

Just in case one of my two cars has another failure, and I have replaced racks in both, I have a kit and a leaking ZF rack standing by. Another little one of life's little education moments.

Same. I got a UPS tracking # the day after I ordered. That was a month ago and it's still "waiting for UPS pickup"

I've called 4 times to see whats up and they put me on hold for 10 minutes then say "we'll call you back when we get ahold of the warehouse guys." Shockingly no calls back.

volvowagoon 03-16-2021 05:19 PM

Sorry if this is considered thread jacking, but is this an issue for '89+ cars too? Are the part store remans any good? I just replaced the power steering pump in our '89 and the power assist is only mostly back. There's still some hang up during low speed turns which makes me believe that the seals are shot. I'm not scared to rebuild with rebuilding the rack myself as long as a good seal kit is available.

No rebuilders are stocking the Volvo racks on an exchange basis now. So yes, the same problem exists for the newer style racks, too.

I believe you because I've heard this said several times before, so don't take this as argumentative. I just want to know what I'm missing. Is there something wrong with the unit listed by Cardone? Maybe it's worth trying and finding out for myself? I guess the worst that can happen is that I need to return it.

TestPoint 03-16-2021 09:53 PM

I have replaced several local auto parts stores rebuilt racks over the years. One turned out to be a NASCAR rack. Only had power turning left.

Only choices these days is DIY or send in your rack for a rebuild. This rebuild is not rocket surgery. Anyone with some experience in this area should be able to do one. I have a digital copy of the GreenBook on the rack rebuild if you want to try it.

volvowagoon 03-16-2021 10:19 PM

As long as I can get a good seal kit and way to disassemble without special tools, I'm not scared to try it. I think what would suck more is to turn my stock rack in as a core only to find that the part store rack is true garbage without hope of rebuilding.
