Hi All,

I started this projects some months ago when i found a V70II D5 163HP 2002 with 200k KM for a very good price.

Unfortunately the free time for that project is very limited, so i started with the remove of engine and all electrical parts from the V70 and with the wiring rework.

Engine only need the ECM, CEM (due to immobilizer), key reader and the original key.
I also keep the ABS ecu because ECM use speed sensor for a little fuel optimization.

Also found a 960 oil pan and started the mod.
More picture on it later because unfortunately i not have tools and expertise for welding aluminum, so now the oil pans parts are in the hand of an expert

Found and installed a used diesel high pressure pump from a V70II 185HP 2005 that is 3cm shorter respect of the old one

And now it's time for 180? turn of the Turbo, so i have made an adapter

During the wait of oil pan welding, started to take some fitting measurement with a "Gold Volvo Jig"

Basically i need to insert a 3cm spacer on the M90 support for reach the body holes.
And i need also to make/buy a drive shaft spacer (3cm) or find a 6cm guibo (if exist).

Ciao!

The best of 2 worlds, D5 engine is just awesome.
With a good 940 chassis it will be a perfect DD with a cool MPG, with my old S60 D5 163HP Geartronic if i stay cool on right pedal it was something like 5.5L/100km

Very cool project.

Have you looked at hacking the EDC15? I think the immobilizer can be removed on many cars (Volvo sometimes very difficult though).

Drove many km's with D5 equipped cars, one of the better Diesel engines on the market (in my biased Volvo opinion). But seriously, they have very little problems compared to many other diesel engines of the last 15 years. And with some work can be very powerful.

Yes, I have the same opinion related to D5, and it's night and day with my D24 (that have 700k KM).

Unfortunately seems that is impossible to remove the immobilizer from the Volvo EDC because it need drouble check with the CEM.

But i found a complete spare ecus set with keys from a S60 2002 and it works perfectly with the right key.

what do you need exactly?

The starter cover (the one on the left in the previous picture).
Received yesterday.

Today i have taken some measurement and test fitting.

Engine need to be forwarded 53mm due to high pressure fuel pump, so i need to mod my gearbox mount and driveshaft.

Hey Bruno, good to see another project from you. How is your 740 T16 doing?

If I were you, I'd rather elongate driveshaft than get a spacer. If you can't have it done locally, let me know, we're not too far apart.

Anyway, interested to see how it turns out, since I'm currently building something similar for my 960.

Yes truck service/workshops can usually do all kinds of drive shaft fixing. Shortening, balancing, painting was ~125 euro for my M90 swap. Now I have a lathe I would try it myself though :-P

Ah ok. I heard that other EDC15 systems were easier to remove the immobilizer.
Nice that it works with the D5 this way.

Oh, there is a small rubber plug above the rear main seal. It can fall/pop out. In 2004 Volvo changed it to a full metal freeze plug.. Maybe best time to install a new one now! When it falls out the engine leaks a lot of oil..

Oh and I assume you have seen that the 960 power steering hoses are a direct fit to the P2 power steering pump? At least on my T6 block the lines from the 960 bolt right in!

Hi!

Thanks! My T16 is parked at the moment from a long time. Due to some problem i sold it in past, but i bought my T16 after some months.
After this D5 project i have another project, restoration of my 780 T16 :)

Yes, now my plan is to elongate the driveshaft beacause 5cm is too much for a spacer.
Thank you for your offer!! I will contact you if a local shop can't make it (probably the only one near me is the one that prepare off-road cars).

Thank you for this kind information! I will change the rubber plug, and for the steering hose probably i will use a custom made pipes from local high pressure idraulic workshop because in Italy the 960/90 with 6 cyl engine are very very rare (i saw only two in my life).

Today i have taken measurement for the first engine mount
