hot engine

I drove the car for five minutes and parking I realized the temp guage was in the red. The car had loss power and started to ping. I shut it down and after an hour it starts and run ok. how ever oil seems to be coming from where the head mates to the block at cylinder 3 . I am going to fix the heater valve tormorrow. but how can I know if the head is warped. I can use the tester in the coolant to see if the head gasket is leaking. but I fear the worst. I called the junk yard to find out what and engine costs

Sounds like you have a sticking thermostat, and that you will at least need some head work & gasket.

Glad to see your checking into the alternatives, it is good to run the numbers, do an estimate and see what your options are. Sometimes it can cost more to fix a car/engine to replace it.
